The Center for Economics and Policy Research notes that a private prison company with a history of legal problems in the United States has landed a six-figure non-competitive contract with the Department of Homeland Security (see line 67 on the second tab of this table (MS Excel file)).
It is not clear if the firm, called Geo Group Inc., is being paid for work already done or that will be done, nor is it clear where the work is being performed. The “vendor city” is listed as Boca Raton (the firm's headquarters) and the “place of performance” is listed as Washington. Is it possible, since the fee is through the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, that the work is for something related to Haitian refugees but not directly related to earthquake relief?
The comment field in the table notes that the work is for the “Haiti surge.” Haiti surge? Oh, boy.
